Guy Michelmore

I came to the conclusion, several years ago, (says Anne Miller) that there is no single characteristic that makes for a successful TV and film composer. Every writer is so different and what works for one doesn’t always work for another. Each composer has their own element of magic and working with Guy Michelmore has been a delight. Seeing Guy record the score to Jackboots on Whitehall in Prague last year was a high of 2010 for me.

Guy joined Accorder a few months after we put the Accorder Music Publishing name-plaque on the door, but I first met Guy about 15 to 20 years ago, shortly after he’d left Newsroom South East to continue a passion that was growing in composing for television and films.

Guy’s mother was Jean Metcalfe, the BBC presenter of Two Way Family Favourites and Woman’s Hour. His father is Cliff Michelmore, television presenter and producer, best known for the BBC television programme Tonight. Cliff once interviewed himself and asked whether either his son or daughter had shown any interest in television. Cliff answered by saying that his ten year-old Guy was “at that point where he is fascinated and interested in all things … even his father’s job!”

I asked Guy a few questions I didn’t know about him and thought I’d share:

1. What are you watching on TV?
Revisiting Father Ted at the moment on DVD – work of complete genius. The Mentalist after a long hard day composing is an entertaining way to end my day.

2. What song would you have loved to have written?
Help! is so original; Somewhere Over the Rainbow is as close to a perfect song as you get I think.

3. What is your greatest extravagance?
The mooring for my boat. It costs me a fortune but it’s worth it for being able to go off on the boat without worrying about the state of the tide!

4. Do you like cats or dogs?
Both but mainly dogs as they don’t eat birds, and birding is my big thing and cats and garden birds don’t mix.

5. What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without?
My laptop.

6. If you could perpetuate a myth about yourself what would it be?
Did you know he learnt to speak Mandarin in a weekend? It’s true I tell you.

7. How do they get deer to cross the road at the yellow signs?
(see question 11)

8. What is/are your all-time greatest movies?
Casablanca, The Third Man, Star Wars IV, Notting Hill

9. What’s the biggest lie you’ve ever told?
That I learnt Mandarin in a weekend.

10. What colour are your boxers?
Camouflage in case I need to hide in the jungle having found myself in an episode of Lost.

11. What keeps you awake at night?
Thinking about question 7.

12. What are you working on at the moment?
Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Iron Man Armored Adventures, Davincibles, Jungle Book and Superhero Squad.
