(July 2009) Accorder composer Phil Sawyer has been commissioned by Discovery Networks Europe and Aqua Vita Films of the UK to write the music for the much anticipated Gorilla School documentary series. The 13 part series, to be broadcast worldwide from 2010, tells the remarkable story of the return of captive gorillas to the wild.
Accorder Music Creative Director, Anne Miller said, “This is the perfect commission for Phil. As a committed conservationist with a deep love of African music and culture the subject matter is dear to his heart.”
Phil Sawyer began his music career at the age of 14 as the lead guitarist of various bands like Fleur de Lys, Shotgun Express (which became Fleetwood Mac) and The Spencer Davis Group. In 1970 he left rock to concentrate on classical music, studying composition, harmony, and orchestration. After working as a songwriter and producer for various artists (Florie Palmer, Sandie Shaw) he began writing music for television and radio commercials, corporate films and documentaries. He is also well known for his two Beautiful World albums (in Existence and Forever) which are heavily influenced by African music featuring choirs and traditional sounds including Caribbean rhythms.
